Bunnies on the Road
Untitled, 2012. Acrylic, Collage on Wood. 8.5”x11”
Joan Jett, the Go-go’s, the B52’s and Yoko Ono…I started listening to their music when I moved to Memphis to study. One weekend while visiting family in Little Rock, I ran into my friends Brent and Keith, who were both in medical school. Brent told me about this gay cancer that was spreading in NY. I remember Brent telling me not to do poppers and have sex. I remember the serious tone of his voice.
I remember having sex with guy’s in Little Rock and Memphis who had fled NY…the stories they told me about living in NY…but not thinking that maybe they fled because of this cancer. I did not know that the virus that causes AIDS would soon enter my blood stream. I never pondered about all the random sex I was having with strangers. My disco ball was shattering.
